Do you want to be well?
Yes, Lord, I want to be well. In today’s Gospel, we read that Jesus seems to associate some illnesses with sin. Jesus cautions the man he has healed to stop sinning so that nothing worse happens to him. In today’s world, where sin isn’t acknowledged as real, it can be challenging to digest Jesus’ words. Us? Sinners. You must mean someone else? We are so uncomfortable with examining our choices from a negative lens, fearing an admonition of sin may lower our already fragile self-esteem. But, then, do we contradict the words of Christ or say they have been taken out of context? Possibly not. Maybe, just maybe, I can accept that all my actions are not ‘OK.’ Perhaps the ‘I’m OK, you’re OK’ culture has its limits. If we believe Jesus’ words, possibly sinning can make us ill in more ways than we realise.
Lord, first, may I accept that sinning makes me sick because I am separated from you. May I avoid all occasions of sin, as I do not want to hurt my relationship with God.
