About Today Readings

St Alphonsus Liguori

Exodus 33:7-11; 34:5-9, 28. The Lord is kind and merciful – Psalm 102(103):6-13. Matthew 13:36-43.

It’s worth doing the right thing and following Christ

Redemptorist founder St Alphonsus Liguori was comfortable with people whose lives were disrupted. He even had his own efforts dismantled by Church politics. Moses too knew a dislocated life lived in tents. It was in a tent the Lord appeared to Moses, gifting him the Ten Commandments. Moses went without sustenance for 40 days and nights while he copied the Words of the Covenant onto tablets. Despite these examples of suffering and sacrifice, the Lord is kind and merciful. He told Moses about ‘steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet by no means clearing the guilty’. As Jesus explained, ‘the one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man’ and ‘the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father’. It’s worth doing the right thing and following Christ, even if it takes effort and sacrifice. It’s good for the soul.
