May God bless us in his mercy – Psalm 66(67):2-3, 5-6, 8.

‘Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.’

Throughout history, Mary has often been depicted as a remote figure. While acknowledging her key role in the incarnation, we must not lose sight of her humanity. As Mother of God, she reminds us that God desired to share Godself with humanity. It was her human ‘yes’ to God’s request that made this possible.

Like the rest of us, Mary did not have all the answers. Moments of fear and bewilderment were her lot, alongside moments of encouragement and hope. St Ignatius invites retreatants to speak with Mary as they would to a friend about their desires, hopes and fears. This is a living and loving woman who desires to place us with her son.
