About Today Readings

St Justin

Tobit 2:9-14. The hearts of the just are secure, trusting in the Lord – Ps 111(112):1-2, 7-9. Mark 12:13-17.

Master . . . human rank means nothing to you

I once worked with a man who said he didn’t believe in titles. He said, if the head of the Catholic organisation for which we worked wanted to be called ‘Brother’, then he, Jim, should be called ‘Mister’. I often wondered what would happen if Jim met the Queen.

People in positions of authority can use power unconsciously. At a meeting chaired by a church leader, he held the only microphone and everyone questioning or responding had to shout. When I questioned the justice of a decision just announced, and its impact on a group of marginalised people, he replied, ‘You have made a statement and asked a question.’

‘Pork barrelling’ is in the news. Sports and community grants and bushfire relief funds have been used to win support in marginal seats. Until there is a Federal ICAC, we need people who will challenge such abuse.
