Challenge to assumptions
The Gospel today raises some important questions. Jesus speaks and acts with authority, and everyone is surprised. Why is that? What is it about him that made his confidence and ability so unexpected? Was it simply the fact that he wasn’t a priest? Or was there something else that didn’t square with what people expected from a religious figure?
We all have our ideas about who to trust or listen to. But God seems to like to surprise us, to speak words of truth and freedom in voices that we didn’t anticipate or that maybe even challenge our assumptions. If we take a minute to sit and listen for the Spirit in our lives today, where do we hear God speaking?
