Called to be people of compassion
Our Lenten journey is the annual time for deeper reflection on the meaning of our earthly journeys. The book of Daniel emerges in history only a century or so before the birth of Christ, but the editors of the Book draw material from different phases of Israel’s history. The reference today to having ‘at this time no leader, no prophet, no prince, no holocaust, no sacrifice, no oblation, no incense, no place where we can offer you the first fruits and win your favour’ probably dates to the Seleucid period under King Antiochus 167 BC. It must have been a poignant time of reflection for the Jewish faithful. Today, do many people want to win God’s favour? How can we be missionaries of hope today? Does today’s Gospel provide an answer? We are called to be a people of deep compassion and forgiveness, not seven times but seventy times seven.
