The Father and I are one
Jesus cares for his sheep who know his voice and follow. The sheep and shepherd are reminiscent of a loving relationship between mother and child. It’s said that a newborn recognises her mother’s voice. She’s known it from when she’s first able to hear while growing in utero. Ideally, we’re all born into this loving recognition and belonging.
The experience of belonging to community reminds us that faith is not only individual but needs community. In the earliest Christian communities, the sense of belonging and protection during difficult times must have been critical. Still today, the experience of belonging to community is powerful and healing in difficult times. The experience of faith, too, even when it looks more like doubt, can be the glue that holds people together, even over thousands of years. Strengthened by belonging in God’s enduring love, may we follow Jesus’ example and reach beyond the centre to embrace those on the margins.
