About Today Readings

Jonah 3:1-10. Psalm 129(130):1-4, 7-8. Luke 10:38-42.

If you, O Lord, laid bare our guilt, who could endure it? — Psalm 129(130):1-4, 7-8.

‘Martha welcomed him into her house.’

Jesus may have had friends in various towns and villages, but his friendship with Martha, Lazarus and Mary gets high visibility. In today’s scene, Martha is the dominant person but there is no doubt that both sisters have a firm place in our hearts.

Sometimes we find ourselves identifying with Martha when we care for someone’s physical needs and sometimes with Mary when we give our time and our listening. In both cases we know that the best thing is to attend to what our guests really want.
