1 Corinthians 6:1-11. The Lord takes delight in his people – Psalm 149:1-6, 9. Luke 6:12-19.

The radical nature of the Christian message

Paul’s letter to the Corinthians today says that if you go to the law to solve your problems among genuine Christians, you’ve already lost: ‘It is already a fault in you that you have suits against each other.’ It seems strange that he would need to say it to the Christian community. It shows how much they still had to learn. Paul’s words resonate with the memory of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount instruction, ‘Turn the other cheek’, for he makes the same tough call: ‘Why do you not rather suffer wrong and receive some damage?’ Look around at our society now: how many people are racing to the law courts to defend their reputation or their pride, and what good does it wind up doing them, really? We see the radical nature – but also the deep wisdom – of the Christian message: this is not the world for victories.
