About Today Readings

Easter Tuesday

Acts 2:36-41. The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord – Psalm 32(33):4-5, 18-20, 22. John 20:11-18.

We are called by name

We don’t know what the resurrected Jesus looked like, but you would imagine that after a few years as his disciple, Jesus would have been recognisable as your rabbi. It wasn’t until Jesus called Mary by name that she recognised him. Maybe we also fail to recognise Jesus, believing he is beyond reach, or perhaps we are yet to hear his personal call. Jesus asks Mary an important question, ‘who is it that you are looking for?’. This echoes his questions to the disciples at the start of John’s Gospel, ‘what is it that you seek?’. Jesus expands Mary’s understanding of himself, from that of teacher and rabbi, to being the Son of the Father. Subsequently, it transforms her understanding of her relationship with God, to that of daughter. Our vocational call is to recognise ourselves as children of God, to know we are called by name and that we are sent to share this good news with others.
