Our Lady of Lourdes
Genesis 1:20-2:4. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth! – Psalm 8:4-9. Mark 7:1-13.
A unifying message
This seems like a mismatch of readings – the glory of creation that was good and then Mark’s Gospel being very blunt in telling off the Pharisees for caring more about clean hands than their duty to God. The first creation myth of Genesis is so rich with imagery and words – God as creator and that creation is good is the best message for humanity – excellent promotion of care for creation and care for the dignity of the human person.
This part of our scriptures links us with so many other world faiths, it is unifying. Jesus’ message to the Pharisees is clanging when he references hypocrisy as stated by the Prophet Isaiah, pointing out that what is of God is important, not what is human regulation masked as doctrine – wow! Both readings pack their own punch.
