He taught them with authority
Today’s Gospel reminds us of Jesus’ supreme authority over evil. It is so easy to feel overwhelmed at times with the amount of evil in our world. Ours is a fallen world. There are times when I feel surrounded by evils without and plagued by evils within. It is easy to forget the power Jesus has over forces we think we cannot conquer. In the Gospel reading, a stern word from Jesus was enough to drive out the impure spirit.
Incidentally, I was intrigued by a line in today’s first reading. Hannah was upset, ‘Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.’ It seems, even in Old Testament times, it helps to eat something when you’re down.
