About Today Readings

St Benedict

Genesis 32:23-33. In my justice, I shall see your face, O Lord – Psalm 16(17):1-3, 6-8, 15. Matthew 9:32-38.

The harvest is rich but the labourers are few

When you look at the geography of the Middle East, it’s easy to imagine the danger that sheep would have faced without the protection of a shepherd. Steep rocky inclines and terrain that offered little cover or protection from predators. No doubt Jesus also observed the physical, political and religious environment of his day and the threat these posed to the early Christian community. Jesus knew that the spark of faith ignited by his presence and healing would need to be fanned and protected from the external forces trying to extinguish the fire of faith. These forces continue today, but fortunately we have women and men who are willing to go out into the harvest and to shepherd the flock. Those who look towards the harassed and helpless with the same compassionate heart of Jesus.
