Isaiah 7:1-9. God upholds his city for ever – Psalm 47(48):2-8. Matthew 11:20-24.
Called to be Christ-centred and missionary
In Matthew’s Gospel today Jesus laments that the Jewish communities in which he has healed many are not listening to him. Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum are the setting for many healings and yet they refused to repent. Tyre and Sidon, towns on the Mediterranean coast are not Jewish and yet Jesus is accepted there. How are our own communities, and indeed the Australian church responding to Jesus? Are we becoming more Christ-centred and missionary as the Plenary Council is calling us to be or are we inward focused and closed to the needs of others? Are we in tune with the preparations for the Synod or are we simply still holding to our own journey, our own idea of church? Jesus calls us to behave differently in the world, to repent of selfish behaviour and go out and bring Good News to the world. Otherwise, ‘alas for you’.
