About Today Readings

Ezekiel 47:1-9, 12. The mighty Lord is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge – Psalm 45(46):2-3, 5-6, 8-9. John 5:1-3, 5-16.

House of grace

In Hebrew Beth hesda means ‘house of mercy’ or ‘house of grace’ and this is a fitting name for the miracle that happened at this pool in Jerusalem. This place was chosen by Jesus to demonstrate the healing power of God, in contrast to the paganist belief of healing spirits found in the natural springs. The pool was also symbolic and references Jesus as the living water. Jesus is the fulfilment of the promised life-sustaining water for the people of the desert. While Moses provided water from the rock, Jesus himself is living water, which then flows from within the believer. As people are healed in the Gospels, the good news immediately bubbles up and pours forth to quench the thirst of others.
