Love as God loves

Be humble and welcome the lowly. The brevity and simplicity of today’s Gospel underlines the depth of Jesus’ teaching. To be like Jesus we must remove ego and our desire for affirmation or importance. In offering your care and generosity freely, your munificence is without limit. Humility and deep empathy for the lost, forgotten and marginalised further our virtue. Giving generously to the lowly requires a complete reset of our humanness. When we are able to give without reservation to those at the margins we become like Jesus, and in doing so we find love that our own desires have hidden from us. We are all loved, and we should love all as God loves. This can only be done when we seek no reward, and in doing so we are surprised by the greatest reward of all – love reciprocated.
