About Today Readings

St Lucy

Zephaniah 3:1-2, 9-13. The Lord hears the cry of the poor – Psalm 33(34):2-3, 6-7, 16, 18-19, 23. Matthew 21:28-32.

Actions speak louder than words

Who am I in the parable of the two sons? Am I the smooth talker who is all words and no action, or am I the grumbler who eventually does the job anyway? Do I make promises to others that I don’t follow through on? Do I consider myself a part of God’s family because I said so at confirmation, or because I practise living by God’s Word? And how do I feel about being told that those whom I look down on may enter the kingdom of God ahead of me because they have listened to and believed God’s Word? This parable reminds us that people responded differently to Jesus both in his time, and ours. We are reminded that we are not entitled to the best place or to enter God’s kingdom because of our fine words. We enter God’s kingdom by responding to God’s invitation and living our life with acts of love.
