About Today Readings

St Anthony of Padua

2 Corinthians 1:18-22. Lord, let your face shine on me – Psalm 118(119):129-133, 135. Matthew 5:13-16.

God himself has anointed us and given us his Spirit

Paul writes to the Corinthians, reminding them that God is faithful. God has anointed us and set us apart, giving us the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the guarantee of all that God has in store for us. Paul reminds us of God’s faithfulness, while writing from a place of struggle and persecution yet still firmly committed to his new way of life. Paul was not unfamiliar with human struggles, yet he held deep to the experiential knowledge of God’s faithfulness to us, and God’s eternal presence with us. It can be hard to remain steadfast in this knowledge when life is continually throwing us curve balls and challenges, whether health-related or financial or relational. To be human is to be vulnerable and at the mercy of things outside our control. Yet God’s faithfulness never leaves us. God is always there, and we just need to remember to tune in.
