God’s grace unfolds quietly
Nicodemus comes to Jesus under the cover of night, searching for clarity, yet discovering a truth that unsettles his self-reliance. Jesus invites Nicodemus to trust in things beyond his own understanding. We often pride ourselves on having answers at our fingertips, we can just ‘Google it’, but even the best algorithms sometimes fail to provide the answers to the deeper questions and needs of life. Like Nicodemus, we cling to what we know, hoping this knowledge will save us. Thomas Merton wrote, ‘We do not know what we need, and we do not know what we are asking for’. The Holy Spirit invites us to loosen our grip and surrender to God’s gentle guidance, reminding us that his grace unfolds quietly, beyond what we can measure or control.
