Quiet invitation of God’s miracles
In today’s Gospel we see Jesus rebuking the towns that witnessed his miracles yet refused to change, places where grace passed through the streets and still hearts remained unmoved. Hardness of heart is rarely dramatic and more often it looks like spiritual impatience. We want to skip to dessert without eating our veggies and desire consolation without conversion.
God’s miracles are generally quiet invitations. They might look like a nudge toward forgiveness, or a call to serve and to live more generously. These are the miracles that require an inner return to Jesus. The tragedy of the towns in the Gospel is not that miracles failed to occur, but that the opportunity for transformation was squandered. The question for us is uncomfortably close: what miracles pass before our eyes each day, quietly asking us to change?
