How do you respond when Jesus calls?
We are called to be light for the nations, but not as a lighthouse perched on a distant hilltop. The light of our faith finds its brightest expression through the proximity and intimacy of our relationships. It is in the relationships where we are known and loved that we hear God call us by name. Social researcher and psychologist, Hugh Mackay, claims ‘everyone’s deepest desire is to be heard’ and that this provides us with a sense of belonging and acceptance. Some prefer to imagine a God who is distant, removed, judging and cruel, but the Gospels describe God as a shepherd who knows each of our voices, who has ‘written our names in heaven’. Do you respond like Mary Magdalene when she suddenly recognises the risen Jesus in the calling of her name and proclaims him as divine teacher (John 20:16)? Or does your back stay turned?
