About Today Readings

Ezekiel 28:1-10. It is I who deal death and give life – Deuteronomy 32:26-28, 30, 35-36. Matthew 19:23-30.

Our lives are in God’s hands

The Outback can be a frightening, overwhelming reality. The endlessness of the bush and the nighttime skies alike pose a constant reminder that we are not in control here, that in fact we are each but a molecule in the universe.

And yet, this experience can also bring about a deeper kind of peace. To realise we are small is also to discover all the ways in which we have been desperately trying to convince ourselves or others that we are not. It is wasted effort that we can now put aside. Like it or not, our lives are in God’s hands.

In the Gospel today, Jesus tries to bring his listeners to a similar happy surrender. It’s not only impossible for you to save yourselves, he says, it’s more impossible than the most impossible thing you can imagine. In other words, stop trying. There is nothing to be afraid of. God will care for you.
