St Cyril of Jerusalem
Isaiah 1:10, 16-20. To the upright I will show the saving power of God – Ps 49(50):8-9, 16-17, 21, 23. Matthew 23:1-12.
Cease to do evil; learn to do good
Coming between two other great saints, today we celebrate the Feast of St Cyril, who fostered the city of Jerusalem as a major site for Christian pilgrimage. Cyril was a theologian of the early Church and Bishop of Jerusalem. He actively promoted veneration of the holy sites in Jerusalem. In this great Year of Jubilee, we are seeking to be pilgrims of hope. Physical pilgrimages can be important. You might recall a pilgrimage you have had in your lifetime and how that pilgrimage has encouraged you to search for justice or help the oppressed. Just as important is the pilgrimage of our hearts – to the centre of the heart of God. This inner pilgrimage to our heart can help us learn to do good, cease to do evil; and, in the words of today’s reading from Isaiah, ‘Let us talk this over’ says the Lord.
