Spiritual beacons

Today in the celebration of the Dedication of the basilicas of Saints Peter and Paul. We not only remember the architectural monuments but mainly that they are spiritual beacons. These basilicas were built on the tombs of the saints.

Peter, a humble fisherman chosen by Christ, and Paul, a tireless missionary, steadfast in faith and passionate about spreading the word of Christ. I remember being in the Cathedral in New York, at the midday celebration where Cardinal Dolan told us it was the anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the Cathedral. Yes, it was celebrating the actual laying of the stone, but it was the laying of the foundations of the thousands of Catholics who would gather in downtown New York – the place where dreams are made.

In our time, when faith is often challenged, this feast encourages us to stand firm like Peter, to proclaim boldly like Paul, and to remain planted in the Church that continues God’s mission today.
