St John Eudes
Judges 6:11-24. The Lord speaks of peace to his people – Ps 84(85):9, 11-14. Matthew 19:23-30.
Language of love
It won’t be long before spring wakes the earth from sleep. It’s a good moment to enjoy the opening prayer of today’s Mass: ‘fill our hearts, we pray, with the warmth of your love.’ When Jesus says in today’s Gospel that some things are impossible for humans, but nothing is impossible for God, his words draw me to an appreciation of just how much God’s love can enable us to imagine and to achieve. Even human love is extraordinary. I know an elderly man who visits his wife, who is suffering dementia and requires care, every single day without fail. Usually, he goes on the bus and helps her with her evening meal. She no longer recognises him. But she recognises love. I am inspired by many stories like this. When Peter says, ‘we have left everything and followed you’, he is not asking questions about any kind of business deal or investment. He is speaking the language of love.
