ST JOSEPH.
2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16. Psalm 88(89):2-5, 27, 29. Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22. Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24 / Luke 2:41-51.
The son of David will live for ever – Psalm 88(89):2-5, 27, 29.
‘An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.’
Today, let us celebrate Joseph and be with him in prayer. Matthew tells us of the birth and childhood of Jesus from the point of view of Joseph, whereas Luke tells it much more from Mary’s perspective. Joseph is told by an angel that the child that Mary will bear will be named Jesus, meaning saviour, for he will save his people from their sins.
We may pause here in our prayer, and when ready we may like to ponder the words: ‘They will name him Emmanuel, which means God is with us.’ This child remains with us today just as he was with Joseph and Mary. At the end of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus tells the apostles, ‘I am with you always’ – yes, now and always.
