A faith that acts out love

St Joseph offers an example to each of us in his humility and care. First for Mary, and in turn also for her son, Jesus. He listens to God’s messenger, accepts the will of God, and supports those whom he is called to love and care for. He expresses what St Paul calls in his letter to the Romans, ‘the righteousness which consists in faith’. This is not abstract, theoretical faith but a faith that acts out love. In Matthew’s Gospel the angel of the Lord says to Joseph, ‘Do not be afraid’. To love and serve like Joseph often we need to hear those words, that invitation beyond fear and into life. Not every moment of what followed would have been easy. That’s clear enough in Luke’s telling of the incident at Jerusalem. But there is great yet humble satisfaction to be had in doing what is challenging but good.
