Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit

I find if I want to make a significant change in my life – whether it’s doing more exercise or eating better food or doing some outreach work – I find the best course of action is to start immediately. It takes time to develop a new habit, and it’s easy to get distracted. The more I put something off, the less likely it is that I’ll get onto it.

The spiritual life is similar to this. In today’s reading, Jesus warns his disciples that they should be ready for God to arrive at any moment. If they are to be prepared for God’s coming, they need to be vigilant now. If we want to be more faithful in our prayer, more helpful to our neighbour, today is the time to begin.
