Jesus is among us

Without being disrespectful, I wonder if God makes new year’s resolutions about us? I think it’s possible. God knows all the ways I need to grow this year. I could be kinder and more patient and more grateful and less anxious about things that matter less than I suppose they do. Somehow or other, I suspect God is preparing a few challenges to rattle my complacency. Or maybe a few people will come into my life who will allow my better side to develop. Perhaps I will find reconciliation with someone who has hurt me; perhaps there are relationships I need to let go because they are too painful. I may be driving the car, but God has the map. In the Gospel, John the Baptist tells his followers that ‘there stands among you – unknown to you – the one who is coming after me.’ We could well be standing in that very crowd. Known or unknown, Jesus is among us.
