About Today Readings

Isaiah 7:10-14. Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory – Psalm 23(24):1-6. Luke 1:26-38.

‘I am the handmaid of the Lord’

The Western or Latin church has many great titles for Mary, including some especially suitable for reflection as we approach Christmas. However, as in other areas, the Eastern churches, both Catholic and Orthodox, outdo us in mystery. One title that I find deeply enchanting is Space of the Spaceless One.

When God came to us he did not do so in a manner overtly recognisable as ‘supernatural’, but instead the Son took our limited nature to himself. Thus, Our Lady bore in her body the same God who is beyond all space. She contained the uncontainable. In the Annunciation she took up the supreme grace and role reserved for her, opening high the gates of her heart to receive her God. In these days we are invited to welcome him, and in his mother he has given us a great model to look to.
