Praying the Our Father

One of the wonderful dimensions of the Our Father is that with every recitation we do double duty. Even as we speak, read or think these words to the Father, we also take them in. As the first reading assures us, God’s words, including in scripture, do not go out in vain. As we pray and reflect on these words, over years and decades, we trust that so far as we are open God is at work in us. He gently forms us to honour him and his name in our lives and to do his will. He shapes our hearts to trust more in his providence, to receive his mercy even as we extend it to others and to stay as far as we can from evil. These words are in a sense at once our prayer, our theology and our marching orders.
