About Today Readings

St Apollinaris

Exodus 14:21 – 15:1. Let us sing to the Lord; he has covered himself in glory – Exodus 15:8-10, 12, 17. Matthew 12:46-50.

My mother and my brothers are anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven

Initially, Jesus’ response to the messenger who told him his ‘mother and brothers’ were standing outside anxious to speak to him seems most uncaring. Surely, he realised that they were concerned for health and wellbeing. However, on that particular occasion, Jesus’ focus was not on his immediate family but on those around him whom he identified as his new family of mother, brothers and sisters. It was now time for Jesus to move on to begin the work God had sent him to do, which involved the forming of a new family of disciples who would become known as the Church, a family of which we are all members in virtue of our baptism. It is often the case for many of us that we too have to move on from something or someone significant, and sometimes painfully, in order to do the work God is asking us to do.
