Keep your lamps lit

I was a high school teacher for many years. On occasions, it just so happened that the graduation Mass for Year 12 coincided with the day on which we had this Gospel. It is a great springboard for young people heading out into the wide blue yonder. Jesus says, ‘keep your lamps lit’. As so often, his words are extravagant. Artificial light was expensive in his time. Most people would use it sparingly. Those who wait for the Lord to knock on the door are not supposed to be so cautious. They are called to live large, to use an old expression. The bigger their sense of life’s possibilities, the more likely they are to recognise the Lord knocking on the door of their office, their car, and especially their heart. St Paul says we are no longer aliens or foreign citizens. Everyone belongs in Christ. We all have a part of play in building God’s kingdom, no matter what our age might be.
