Our need for God
Our first reading today identifies God as one who delights in showing mercy. In the psalm we are invited to ask God to show his mercy and love. God’s mercy precedes our request for it. Yet still we ask. ‘Once more have pity on us,’ we hear in the first reading. This stance of seeking mercy is not to demean us but to humble us, to remind us of our need for God.
We might imagine Jesus’ mother and his brothers, described in the Gospel as coming to see Jesus, being humiliated by him as they are, it seems, turned away. But maybe what they experienced was humility. The humility that comes from our recognition that whatever status it might be thought we have, what matters is our relationship with the Father, through the Son and Holy Spirit. How am I being called to be in relationship with the Father today?
