Tue 21st. St Enda. Dn 3:25,34-43; Mt 18:21-35.
In this special Lenten series – Darkness to light: An intimate journey with Jesus – our guest writer looks to the Gospel stories for answers to the questions that many of us ask when faced with difficult times.
‘In anger his master handed him over to the torturers til he should pay all his debt. And that is how my heavenly Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart.Matthew 18:34-35
Forgive or get tortured? Jesus certainly puts a high price on forgiveness. But his concern here is not really about my brother or sister, or about forgiveness. His concern here is about my heart and soul. I was born with a gift, a gift for self-giving love. I can withhold that gift and be selfish and judgmental, but that will soon turn my heart to stone. Jesus is saying to me: ‘Let your heart live, for otherwise you will experience a miserable life; worse still, you will let down the loving God who gave you life.’ In Lent we see Jesus suffering rejection, betrayal, torture, and execution, and yet he forgives us and continues to love us. Lord Jesus, soften my heart, help me follow your way of forgiveness and your way of love.
