About Today Readings

1 Samuel 1:24-28. My heart rejoices in the Lord, my Saviour—1 Samuel 2:1, 4-8. Luke 1:46-56.

The Almighty has done great things for me

The readings and the responsorial psalm work together to show a God who is there for all, not just the powerful. Indeed, in the responsorial psalm (1 Samuel 2:1, 4-8), known as Hannah’s Magnificat, it is a rather revolutionary God who lifts the lowly, feeds the hungry, and breaks the bows of the mighty. Hannah’s Magnificat anticipates the Gospel reading (Luke 1:46-56), known as Mary’s Magnificat. In the first part Mary praises the Lord for his favour, while the second part echoes the revolutionary aspects of Hannah – princes are pulled from their thrones, the lowly are exalted, the hungry filled with good things and the rich sent empty away.

Lord, let us always remember to praise you.
