Treat others as you would like them to treat you
When being unkind young children are often admonished with ‘Don’t do that. How would you like [it/that] to happen to you?’ While the lesson may stick when we are younger (children have an innate fairness), it can become diluted as we age. How easy it is to justify actions and words that cause offence or harm – ‘I didn’t mean it that way . . . they deserved it . . . it’s too late to apologise . . .’
But it is never too late for justice and fairness as today’s readings emphasise. Jesus explicitly says, ‘So always treat others as you would like them to treat you’. In response to the Lord’s favour, Abram builds an altar to the Lord in thanks, while the psalm makes clear that those who act justly, speaking truth, honouring others and helping their neighbour will live in the presence of the Lord.
