About Today Readings

St Cecilia

Apocalypse 14:14-19. The Lord comes to judge the earth – Psalm 95(96):10-13. Luke 21:5-11.

Everything will be brought together under Christ as head

Today’s feast of St Cecilia will encourage various musical recitals and concerts around the world to honour this saint who has become the patron of music. She is a co-patron of sacred music with Pope Gregory the Great (d 604) after whom Gregorian Chant is honoured. We are almost at the end of the Liturgical Year and the readings today come from apocalyptic literature that echoes the end times. Cecilia is remembered as a Roman martyr of the third century persecutions, and some parallels can be drawn between the horror of apocalyptic literature and the horror of a martyr’s death. Cecilia’s body was originally buried in the catacombs, then in the church of St Cecilia in Trastevere built over her home. In 1599 the church was renovated and her body was found to be incorrupt. God still works that ultimately everything will be brought together under Christ as head (cf Eph 1:10).
