Proverbs 21:1-6, 10-13. Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands – Ps 118(119):1, 27, 30, 34-35, 44. Luke 8:19-21.
To act virtuously and with justice is pleasing to the Lord
If there’s a unifying theme from today’s readings, perhaps it can be summed up in the phrase ‘character matters’.
In a world where often it seems the worst people wield the most power, there is comfort in the knowledge that the Lord sees past the external trappings to the inner intent – ‘the Lord weighs the heart’. But however we may look forward to the judgment of the Lord on those we deem unworthy, the more important message is how do we act. Do we speak with temperate truth? Do we act with justice and care towards our families and neighbours? Are we open to the cries of the poor?
We are closest to Jesus when we hear the Word of God and put it into practice.
