About Today Readings

Acts 20:17-27. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth – Psalm 67(68):10-11, 20-21. John 17:1-11.

May they be one, Father, as we are one

Una: Being one as you and God the father are one, Jesus, is a lovely ideal, but it’s not very realistic. Look around you: there are thousands of churches separated from one another. And within the Church people are always quarrelling about your way. If that’s what being one looks like, I would hate to see being divided.

Jesus: You are right, of course, Una. That is why I prayed that you would be one. It’s not something to take for granted but a gift to be prayed for and treasured. It begins with joy at being one with me and with God our father. That leads to listening to one another and to act as a community of friends.

Una: Thanks, Jesus. You mean we should stay in the tent. What about the people and churches outside, though? Should we give up on them?

Jesus: No, Una. The Father and I are also with them and with everyone. It’s up to you to show them
