Christmas Eve
2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12, 14, 16. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord – Psalm 88(89):2-5, 27, 29. Luke 1:67-79.
The Dayspring on high has visited us
Johanna: What a lovely prayer of Zechariah’s, Jesus. He might have meant us when he mentioned the people ‘who sit in darkness and the shadow of death’. Was it you he had in mind when referring to the ‘Dayspring from on high who visited us’?
Jesus: Yes, Johanna, he did mean me. The gift of prophesying like that surely outweighed his pain at being made dumb! His work, like his son John’s, was to point to the God who would send me. A humble but very important calling.
Johanna: But did you only ‘visit’ us, Jesus? You have stayed with us, surely.
Jesus: Well, yes and no, Johanna. Like the Sun I have stayed with you. But the sun goes behind the clouds, out of sight. I do, too. Then you will feel the dark and cold. That’s when am closest to you to guide your feet in the way of peace. Have you ever found that?
