Our Lady Help of Christians
Genesis 3:9-15, 20. Lord, do not deal with us as our sins deserve, nor punish us for our faults – Psalm 102(103):1-4, 8-9, 11-12. Ephesians 3:14-19. Luke 8:19-21.
God’s family is a spiritual one
The terseness of today’s Gospel reading from Luke is ironic because this little moment in history which he records is arguably the moment which transformed the value system of the world. ‘My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.’ With these words, Jesus wipes away the ancient value system of principal duty to family and tribe, and ushers in a vision of one single human family – and all are free to join it and be its members. Because of this principle, Christianity was to become a non-racial (and therefore non-racist) religion. These words explain why Christianity can be found in nations across the world, and why when we go to Mass on a Sunday, we are surrounded by people of every nationality. God’s family is a spiritual one; birth alone does not determine a person’s destiny. Lord, thank you for the boldness of your vision – arguably, you died because of it.
