Ecclesiasticus 2:1-11. Commit your life to the Lord, and he will help you – Psalm 36(37):3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40. Mark 9:30-37.
Thank you for showing your love for us
I often think that one of the many sufferings of Jesus, in becoming human, would have been the loneliness of not being loved like he loved, of not being understood like he understood others, and of having to continually be the one to teach and form his apostles for the job ahead.
What other human did Jesus have to debrief with, to lean on, to feel supported by? His mother would have offered deep comfort and consolation, but he would go many months without seeing her in those early days of his mission. There he was trying to explain to the Apostles, his chosen ones, the horror he would go through during his passion, ‘but they did not understand and were afraid to ask him’.
Jesus’ role on earth was one of complete giving, always, even when he was suffering himself. He lived his life purely for us, and it cost him everything. I know when I am suffering I find it hard to serve, to make space for others and to put my suffering aside. Jesus, thank you for becoming human for us, thank you for showing your love for us by giving us your everything, and thank you for showing us the Way.
