The Annunciation of the Lord
Isaiah 7:10-14, 8:10. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will – Ps 39(40):7-11. Hebrews 10:4-10. Luke 1:26-38.
Let it be done unto me according to your word
Martha: I am so impressed Mary, at how you responded to the angel at that extraordinary meeting. To welcome an angel, to listen carefully without wondering what it might involve for you – that was something else.
Mary: You are very flattering, Martha. Actually, my mother once told me that if an angel visits, you listen. He will tell you all you need to know. That was true of Gabriel. He threw me a bit with his big promises, but I had only one problem with them, and he sorted it.
Martha: Was that the conflict of interest between your vow of virginity and conceiving a child?
Mary: Yes, Martha. Gabriel said that God had taken that into account, and all I had to do was to get on with life as a mother, and be attentive to God’s presence. Is there any other way, Martha?
