You must be born anew
Nicola: I have a lot of sympathy with Nicodemus. You weren’t exactly clear, Jesus. What does being born of the Spirit mean? No metaphors, please, just plain blunt words!
Jesus: It’s really hard to speak of faith without metaphors, Nicola. Try it some time! But being born of the Spirit is to enter God’s world. You find a precious pearl that changes all you see and do. Like falling in love. Do you know what that is like?
Nicola: All too well, Jesus, and the pain of falling out of love, too! Is pain part of God’s world, too, or is it all Pollyanna?
Jesus: Pain is central to it, Nicola, just as to your life. I came from God to share your life. You sent me back on a cross. Through my death you will be reborn to share my life. Can’t you see?
Nicola: It sounds pretty incredible, Jesus. But I would like to.
