About Today Readings

Tuesday in Holy Week

Isaiah 49:1-6. I will sing of your salvation – Psalm 70(71):1-6, 15, 17. John 13:21-33, 36-38.

God meets us with forgiveness

Even while naming Judas among his followers as the one who is to betray him, Jesus honours his friend in a traditional way by offering him bread dipped in oil. In the tradition of the Eucharist, the words ‘I am not worthy to receive you’ are followed by an affirmation of God’s power to heal. Carrying our ‘sinful load’, we humbly trust God is ready to meet us with forgiveness. The consecrated bread and wine as Jesus’ own self is given as the gift of his loving forgiveness. In John’s Gospel, Judas received Jesus’ hospitality up to a point, but then left, intent on following through with his betrayal. Do I accept God’s gift of loving forgiveness and nurture it, light a seed in the light? Am I willing to be what it calls me to be – a more loving, forgiving person? And when I drift or retreat into unloving places, will I remember that the love which has known me from the womb will welcome and forgive me yet?
