St Philip Neri
1 Peter 1:10-16. The Lord has made known his salvation – Ps 97(98):1-4. Mark 10:28-31.
We have left all and followed you
Phil: Jesus, I was delighted to see how kind you were to your disciples. You usually told them to lift their game.
Jesus: Thanks for the compliment, Phil. But perhaps you missed what went before. I had invited a rich young man to follow me, but he declined because he was rich. I told the disciples how hard it is for a rich person to enter God’s kingdom. That’s why Peter asked whether my disciples were safe. That’s why I reassured them that they would be rewarded – including with persecutions! But I also told them that if they saw themselves as special, they would be disappointed. Where do you stand, Phil?
Phil: I want to follow you Jesus. But not for the reward. I sometimes ask if I am kidding myself, though.
Jesus: Always a good question to ask, Phil. But don’t worry, I came to call sinners, after all.
