Apocalypse 14:14-19. The Lord comes to judge the earth – Psalm 95(96):10-13. Luke 21:5-11.
How do we share faith with hopeful joy?
The harvest of humanity is being reaped; the good and the not-so-good. The Messiah is imaged as one with a sickle, taking in the harvest of the faithful. The second harvest, however, makes its way to the ‘winepress of God’s wrath’. A grim scene. So too is the scene sketched by Jesus of ‘dreadful portents and great signs from heaven’. The Temple, a place so vital to Judaism, was indeed destroyed. So much of what must have seemed certain must have fallen away with its loss. And those early Christians struggled, trying to resolve how to be faithful to the Way of Jesus amid persecution and internal disputes, and to grow as a faith community. What are the signs of our times that awaken and shaken us? Life is turbulent – beginning with our personal and family struggles and rippling out to the wider world. How do we return to the difficult simplicity of our faith journey? How do we draw strength from God and others, sharing faith with hopeful joy?
