Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord — Psalm 121(122):1-5.

‘Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.’

The mother of Jesus and his brothers seem to be waiting like VIPs for exclusive backstage access to the star performer.

But Jesus, busy preaching to the crowd, is not waiting for the comfort of family and friends. It seems a callous rejection: surely there’s nothing wrong with a quick hello! However, rather than excluding his family, Jesus aims to widen his reach and embrace all who would hear and do God’s word.

Jesus reaches beyond the safety of those who support him into our lives and hearts as a brother. He invites us and challenges us to reach out generously, and to hear and do God’s word.

We are called to draw on the Christ-like qualities of love, forgiveness, compassion, humility, goodness and justice. Jesus, help us reach out to others as we strive to do God’s will.
