About Today Readings

Ss Cosmas and Damian

Ezra 6:7-8, 12, 14-20. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord – Psalm 121(122):1-5. Luke 8:19-21.

True growth requires risk

I sometimes wonder about this Gospel passage. Jesus sounds almost dismissive of his family who are trying to get to see him. I’m sure this isn’t the case. We know that he loves his mother deeply, and I’m sure he would have also been close to his kinsmen (it’s hard to tell from the translation if they were his step-brothers or cousins). I wonder if his family were coming to get him because they were concerned about his safety?

Sometimes, when we take risks in our creative life and our ministry, those we love most can become naysayers. This is not because they don’t love us, but because they want for us to be safe from failure. True growth, however, requires risk.

Lord, help me to be close to you in prayer so that I might know your path, even if it takes me out of my comfort zone.
